‘Harbor of Stories’ Historic Kempsville Public Art Dedication Ceremony April 18; Pre-Event History Talk April 15
The public is invited to join the City of Virginia Beach Cultural Affairs Department at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 18 at the northeast corner of Witchduck Rd. and Princess Anne Rd. for the dedication of “Harbor of Stories,” a dynamic new public artwork created by Washington Glass Studio, in collaboration with the City of Virginia Beach and the Kempsville community.
Inspired by Kempsville’s history and character, the installation features glass panels created by local residents through hands-on workshops, reflecting the people, places and stories that shape this community. “Harbor of Stories” evokes a modern aesthetic but also pays homage to the maritime history of the area.
The installation, which is in the shape of a schooner sailing ship, serves as a symbolic guidepost, illuminating a path forward.
“’Harbor of Stories’ is a vibrant celebration of the rich history and enduring character of Historic Kempsville,” said Bobbie Gribble, chair of the Historic Kempsville Citizens Advisory Committee. “Through our neighbors’ participation and collaboration with the City and the artist, the sculpture will serve as a landmark and gathering point, representing community, local identity and a sense of unity.”
Public parking for the dedication of "Harbor of Stories" at 10 a.m. next Saturday, April 18, is available in the nearby vacant lots at 5131 Princess Anne Rd. and 445 Kempshire Ln.
Earlier in the week prior to the dedication, Dr. Stephen Mansfield, Professor at Virginia Wesleyan University and author of “Princess Anne County and Virginia Beach: A Pictorial History,” will host “Defining Kempsville,” a pre-event talk exploring the history of the Kempsville area, its historic contributions and its place in the story of Virginia Beach. “Defining Kempsville” takes place at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, April 15, in Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 5181 Singleton Way. Light refreshments will be provided.
Both the public art dedication and pre-event talk are free and open to the public. If you have any questions, please email Cultural Affairs. Learn more about the Virginia Beach Public Art Program at VBPublicArt.org .
